Turns out, certain versions of HP’s printer drivers cause MS Office to crash when the printer is not available on the network. The culprit was her new HP printer connected to her husband’s PC. So, when she would use Office at school or if she used Office when Sean’s PC was turned off, the application would crash. Nearly drove her insane.
So for the sake of any other victims out there, here’s the error message to look for:

Notice the DLL listed: hpzpm309.dll
You can find out more about this error on several newsgroups.
The quick solution is to set another printer (even a fake one) as the default printer. One of the newsgroups suggests installing a newer driver from HP.
