Dinner For Three

By J Aaron Farr on Monday, September 10, 2007

What are dinner prices like here in Hong Kong? Well, over the weekend Jenny and I had the pleasure of hanging out with fellow Apache member Jukka Zitting who is in Hong Kong at the moment for business. On Saturday we met up in Hong Kong Central and went to Victoria Peak. I think this was the first time I had attempted to go to the Peak on a weekend. The line for the tram was easily an hour and a half wait, so we took a taxi instead ($40 HKD) which was cheaper and faster. The tram is a lot of fun though simply because it’s so steep, but I’d advise going on a weekday.

At Victoria Peak we went to dinner at Tien Yi, the Chinese restaurant in the Peak Tower. It’s a tourist destination, so the prices are inflated, but the view can be very nice. We shared a three dish meal of sweat and sour pork, a seafood dish and broccoli. The food tasted great, but the portions weren’t very large. The bill came out to $100 USD.

On Sunday Jukka took the ferry to visit us on Lamma Island. We took the trail from Yung Shue Wan to Sok Kwu Wan—a picturesque hour and a half walk across the island. Sok Ku Wan is known for its seafood restaurants (there’s not much else in the village) so we had an early dinner. Our set meal included salt and peppered prawns (very good), lobster, chicken with cashews, spring rolls, fried rice and fruit. It was twice the meal we had at Tien Yi and with drinks it came to $90 USD.

It’s certainly possible to dine for much less too. Jenny and I often eat out for lunch or dinner and the bill for us rarely tops $20 USD. It all depends on what sort of experience you’re looking for—a tourist destination with a view, a notable restaurant with open seaside dining, or take-out from a local family establishment. It all depends on what you’re looking for.

And by way of contrast, when Judy and I signed up for our biking and hiking tour of China in May, traveling from Hong Kong to Beijing, we were told that we would need to pay for 26 of our 39 meals. How much money did they suggest that we bring to cover the cost? $150 U.S. dollars!
