So I caved in and saw the latest Harry Potter movie. I’ve seen all the other ones in the theater so it would be tough to break tradition even though it seems that the series is progressively more flashy and less captivating. Aaron thinks that I disliked it because I stepped into the theater with a bad attitude. True, true. Even still, aside from the weak plot, the “children’s” acting was on par with Saved by the Bell. But there was one little jewel of information that I gathered after the movie. When talking to my friend who just returned from Japan, he revealed that while staying in a business class hotel he was surprised to find a Harry Potter book in place of a Gideon Bible. Enough said.
In other news, our little family hung out at Hong Kong Park today. Hong Kong island is always fascinating on Sundays because that is when all the domestic helpers have their day off. Hong Kong has countless raised walkways that attract groups of (mostly Philippinas) domestic helpers. And you’ll find these groups in parks and sidewalks and cubbyholes and everywhere! Where else do they have to go? Who wants to stay at home with their employer on their only day off?
So they bring picnics complete with blankets, umbrellas (people use them here for sunshade), cards, music, and food. Some women sell small crafts that they make in their spare time. It’s really a cultural phenomenon.
