A Tale of a Camera and a Car

By J Aaron Farr on Saturday, March 22, 2008

Thursday, while in between Adobe events, I walked out on the streets of Hong Kong Central in search of a particular camera lens. On my way back to the conference site, I got a quick glimpse of some crazy looking car:

Pagani Zonda

The batmobile-like car surprised me, so I only caught a photo of the rear. When I eventually got home that night I started searching for details about this mystery vehicle. Turns out it was a Pagani Zonda which costs somewhere around US$350,000 with less than 100 or so ever made. In searching for further information, I happened across this photo on Wikipedia:

Which is the exact same car. Yeah, license plate and all. Weird.

The moral of this story is that… I have a new camera! Our lovely Sony R1 was stolen during Jenny’s trip back to the US at Christmas. Since then, we’ve been camera-less and often debated what to do—get a cheap, slim digital camera, or a entry-level DSLR.

In the end, I ended up with a Canon 400D with an EF-S 17-85mm F4-5.6 IS lens to which I added a cheap EF 50mm F1.8 lens. So far, so good, though surprisingly I do miss a few features of the R1, such as the swivel LCD with live-time preview. With us visiting Thailand all of next week, I hope to learn more about the camera and return with some decent photos.
