Job Hunting

By Jennifer Farr on Wednesday, March 05, 2008

Reviewing the progress of our little “start-up” always results in a grand wish for more time and achievement. Aaron pines for a product. I dream to be marooned on the beach with no job to speak of except the brilliant title of “mommy.”

Alas, start-ups are none too easy and so we trod on with fingers crossed. Luck being an underestimated element, we continue into risky terrain with a new business, not to mention a foreign location. The final say is that I need to pull my weight a little longer while still clinging to beach dreams.

So I job hunt. My current contract is up in three months. I will retire my kindergarten hat and search for other work. Five hours of solid teaching per day leaves an exhausted “mommy.”

I could delve into primary or secondary school. For you Americans, that means middle or high school. With this job comes less teaching hours, but I would still set out the door and return 11 hours later.

Another option is freelance editing or writing. This work is harder to find, but it’s up for grabs if English is your mother tongue. I’ve still had no luck determining this pay scale in Hong Kong.

Posing as a University lecturer is an option, however the money isn’t grand thanks to the title: intern. How else can the local Universities get cheap foreign labor?

The most attractive situation so far is tutoring at a language center. Twenty hours a week of tutoring equates to full-time. And this is minus the face time that is normally required at a school. But it’s evening work. So I’d begin my day at 4pm and end around 8pm. Full time at a kindergarten pulls in between 16K-18K HKD a month. A tutoring gig can land you 21K.

Less hours… more pay… I can’t wait to sport a new hat.

I’m also looking for less work - more pay….here in the states at our age, we call it retirement!!  If we keep socking away and stay out of the stores….we just might see our dream come true in a few years!

Good luck with the new hat search!
