What's a startup with some changes?

Back in 2006, William Taysom and I decided to throw our hat into the startup ring. We made some rather unusual choices, such as moving to Hong Kong, and experienced enough success to allow us to work on projects and products of our choosing. Four years later, we’re making some new choices that mean our startup, JadeTower, will need to be put back on the shelf for a while.

We spent much of the last two years working on a game engine and development environment with the vision of allowing more people to create and share video games. We made impressive strides on this monumental project, but changes in technology (and Apple’s iPhone SDK terms) had us at an impasse earlier this year. After much consideration, we decided to put the product on hold and look into new endeavors.

This has led me to relocate from Hong Kong to Los Angeles to join a new venture there. William is still in Hong Kong and will be working with the fantastic developers. JadeTower will remain “operational” to handle continued consulting William and I do from time to time, but for the most part, we’ve worked with partners to hand off our previous clients, customers and projects.

William and I still have some scratches to itch, so I expect we’ll still be releasing some code, but our primary focus will be elsewhere. I’ll be making occasional trips back to Hong Kong and China myself (I think I’ll be around in August), so I’m not disappearing from the Asia scene completely.

For those we’ve worked with over the last few years, it’s been a fun and exciting experience. As we’re able to share about our next round of adventures, we’ll be posting more.
