Humidity

Now that I’m back in Hong Kong, my hair is curly again. There is also no need for skin lotion here. Why? Does 95% humidity mean anything to you?

In our 700 square foot flat, we have 4 air conditioners. Normally, we only have one of them turned on during the day, and then we shut it off and rely on fans through the night. When on, this air conditioner continually drips onto our balcony. We finally smartened up and put a 2 gallon bucket under the blasted thing. Every morning I check the bucket and have to stand in a puddle of water because it’s overflowing. I dump out the bucket and by evening time, the thing is overflowing again. That equates to over 2 gallons of water that is pulled out of our air every day. Yikes!

We live on the middle floor in our building. The folks above and below us only rely on windows and fans to keep cool and to save money in their monthly electric bill. Granted, we pay around 100 USD a month when our one air conditioner is on. They probably pay about 20 USD. But they have to deal with mold. And books curl. And windows have to be open so some sneaky mosquitoes find that one small hole in the screen. The 80 extra dollars is worth it to me. Heck, I’d probably even pay double that.

I’ve found one other bonus to 95% humidity. I don’t have to iron my clothes anymore! Just being outdoors for five minutes ensures that everything on my body is dripping and wrinkle free. The wonders of tropical island life.
